Description
American Folk Art – Hand-carved American Indian figure “Cigar Store Indian” This wonderful hand-carved wooden figure is thought to have been created around 1910, probably to advertise cigars in front of a general merchandise emporium or tobacconist shop. It stands roughly 6 feet, 1 inch tall, is about 2 feet wide at the widest point and 14 inches deep at the deepest point (the outstretched arm). It is built on a base that is 8 inches deep by 11 inches wide. The base consists of boards, one of which is missing. The finish has not been altered since it was purchased about seven years ago. Wax was applied to protect the old paint. The top layer of brown paint has flaked off in a few spots, revealing earlier red, blue, yellow and green paint. The face is especially nicely carved, and the figure has a wonderful rustic look. This is a one-of-a-kind carved work of Americana. It weighs roughly 80 pounds, and must be picked up at my location in Orange County, California. Any shipping arrangements must be made by the buyer, and the buyer is responsible for any and all costs of shipping and insurance.
